The Hands That Never Trembled

The Hands That Never Trembled

Hope is not built in a single moment. It grows over time, through the things we experience and the things we endure.

We can hope things get better. We can hope circumstances change. We can hope tomorrow looks different from today.

But hoping for something and having hope are not always the same thing.

As I watched my world crumble, hope remained.

Faith wavered. Joy faded. Happiness felt like something I might never experience again.

There were days when I struggled to see anything good ahead. Days when everything I thought was secure seemed to be falling apart.

But hope never left.

It wasn’t that I knew things would get better. I didn’t.

It wasn’t that I understood what God was doing. I didn’t understand that either.

I had hope when I had little else.

Hope stayed.

The Hand that never trembled | Eremos | Podcast

This was the most difficult episode of the season for me to record. Not just because of what I needed to say, but because of the memories those words brought with them.

I had prepared myself as best I could. I had the support of a close friend who had walked beside me through much of what I was sharing.

Still, the words were hard. The memories were hard.

And there was something I wanted to make clear.

This is my experience. It is how I saw God working through some of the most difficult moments of my life. It does not mean everyone will experience Him in the same way.

I don’t believe suffering is required to find hope. But I have learned that suffering can reveal where our hope rests.

And sometimes what remains surprises us.

Easy to Say

It’s easy to say, “I hope things work out.”

Or, “I hope things get better.”

We say those things because we want something good to happen. There is nothing wrong with that.

But what happens when things don’t work out?

What happens when the circumstances don’t change? When the answer isn’t what we wanted? When the thing we prayed would never happen becomes the thing we have to walk through?

Where is our hope then?

Hope in Christ is more than believing everything will eventually turn out the way we want.

It is trusting Him even when it doesn’t.

In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood before a king who threatened to throw them into a blazing furnace if they refused to worship his image.

They believed God was able to deliver them.

But they also said something remarkable.

Even if He did not deliver them, they would not bow.

Their faithfulness wasn’t dependent on their circumstances changing. They trusted God whether He rescued them or not.

That is hope.

Not simply wishing for something better.

Knowing who is better.

I Will Not Be Shaken

There is a verse hanging over one of the doors in my home.

“I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” — Psalm 16:8 (ESV)

Those words have become more than something I read when I walk through that doorway.

They are a reminder.

They don’t mean nothing bad will happen. They don’t mean I will never experience loss, grief, fear, or uncertainty.

They don’t even mean every difficult circumstance will end the way I want it to.

They mean my hope is not dependent on those things.

I can be afraid and still have hope.

I can grieve and still have hope.

I can stand in the middle of circumstances I do not understand and still trust the God who holds me.

I will not be shaken because His hands do not tremble.

When everything around me is shaking, He is not.

When I cannot see what comes next, He can.

When I do not have the strength to hold everything together, I don’t have to.

His hands hold me firm.

And because His hands do not tremble, I can place my hope in Him.
